The Best Way to Start a Plant-Based Diet

Going plant-based may seem daunting, especially if you’re used to eating meat daily. But the best way to start is to jump right in and start incorporating delicious plant-based foods into your diet, like our mouthwatering burgers made with juicy portobello mushrooms, cannellini beans, onions, fennel, and garlic. You won’t miss the meat after you try it!

How to Start a Plant-Based Diet With Burgers

Jumping into a plant-based diet can be challenging, especially if you’re not ready to completely give up meat, dairy, and eggs. Instead, think about it as a way to explore new foods. Many people who give up animal products find themselves craving new tastes more than ever before. So to ease yourself into it gently, why not start with something familiar?

Plant-Based Diet Definition

As its name suggests, a plant-based diet focuses on foods derived from plants, including not only fruits and vegetables, but nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans as well. Adopting a plant-based diet doesn’t mean you’re a vegetarian or vegan or never eat meat or dairy. Instead, it means you’re choosing to get more of your food from plant sources.

As far as health benefits go, plant-based diets are no different from any other healthy diet, though they often have fewer trans fats. But as you might expect, eating more plants tends to be associated with better health outcomes in most people. For example, a recent study found that after two years of following a plant-based diet, people had lower blood pressure levels and reduced risk factors for cardiovascular disease compared to those who didn’t follow one.

Decide How Strict You Want to Be

Plant-based eating is a spectrum and encompasses several diet variations, including vegetarianism and veganism. A vegetarian diet excludes meat but some variations may still include dairy, eggs, or other animal products. Whether it’s for health, environmental, or ethical reasons, a vegan diet eliminates animal products altogether, including dairy, eggs, and honey.

So, how strict do you want to go? At the end of the day, the decision is completely up to you,  but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can always gradually eliminate more animal products from your diet with each passing week or month according to your preference.

Make a Plan

The best way to go plant-based is to start with a plan. Start by asking yourself:

1. What are my current eating habits?

2. What do I enjoy eating?

3. How much time and money do I have?

Once you have these answers down, you can start identifying foods that you’d like to eat more or less of, substitute with plant-based alternatives, or completely cut out. Remember: You don’t have to go cold-turkey (pardon the pun); there are many ways to add more plants to your diet without completely removing meats, eggs, or dairy. When you’re ready to take the plunge, there are plenty of plant-based alternatives to all your favorite animal products.

A plant-based diet is full of healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that can help protect against chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. So regardless of your starting point, adding more plants to your plate—and your body—is always a good idea.

Start Today!

Jumping into a plant-based diet can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Just take things one step at a time. Try swapping out just one meal a week (or a day) for beans or vegetables or a meat-alternative. After you get used to that, try it with another meal. Make sure to incorporate fun and delicious plant-based foods, like our juicy 100% vegan burgers, to keep things interesting. In no time, you’ll find yourself with a whole new perspective on food!
